Xavier had an eye check up in August and one of his eyes had changed just slightly. I wanted the vision place to replace the lens in his current frames for the eye that had changed but after a very frustrating conversation learned that it would cost me more to do that than to buy new frames and lenses. Aggravated at the wastefulness of this world, I had them write me out his script and left. I have ordered glasses online for Mike, Natalee and myself but never had for Xavier. He has a really bad astigmatism and for some reason that left me nervous to try it, although his script is written out just the same as any of ours.
I had intentions of ordering him new glasses online and kept letting it slip my mind. However, the other day I noticed him turning his paper completely sideways to read words while blending with me at the table and I realized that I had never gotten him glasses with his new script. {Turning his paper sideways to cut and read was a first sign to me that he ever needed glasses - the doctor said it's because of the astigmatism and is trying to get the the lines to stay still and focus.} Now aggravated at myself, I sat down that evening to get them ordered. They arrived today and he's very happy! I'm happy also - they are very sturdy and well built and should hopefully last him until his next appointment in 8 months at least! We've tried a few places online to order from and our favorite, hands down, is Zenni Optical.
I only get all metal or titanium frames when I order and always get ones with spring hinges. This limits the choices quite a bit and raises the price, but is worth it to me.
Xavier also has a really hard time dealing with sun glare. The doctor says this is quite characteristic of a child with an astigmatism like his. Because of this we pay for the anti-glare coating on his glasses ($50+ at the vision center - $5 through Zenni, but free this time because I had a coupon code!). I also paid the $4 to try out a pair of the clip on sunglasses for him this time. He's VERY excited about them. They are a little thin so I'm anxious to see if they hold up, but they fit nicely onto his frames. I think they'll last if he lets us help him put them on and take them off - we'll see!
New specs makes it like an extended Christmas for this handsome fella this morning!
