Community Helpers

We are taking a break from our Mystery of History to do a mini unit on Community Helpers.  We're a week in and we are having a blast!  We spent TWO days (almost 2 hours each day) cutting, coloring, gluing and making A-dorable cardboard community helpers.  We did some studying about what a community helper is and who some are that we know and then I let the children choose what helpers they created...

I think they'd make more if I got out the stuff again.  Some of the workers they chose were fashioned after community helpers in our family.  We have Papa Curtis construction workers, a Papa Curtis farmer, Papa George firefighters, a Nannie teacher, and a nurse that is fashioned after Aunt Lauren and Aunt Kea.  Their librarians are named Jenika and Dinana.  They really enjoyed this part of the study.

The people go in our homemade 4 pocket folders and next week we'll start some of the other activities.  So far the people have come out everyday to be a part of imaginative play.
