Week in a Jumble

Another successful week at the Joyful Jamboree Homeschool!

As a treat for work well done, we watched a Reading Rainbow during the thunderstorm Monday.  Thanks Netflix!  As God would orchestrate it, episode 1 corresponded with bowling and how bowling balls are made.  How relevant since my kids got to bowl for the first time last week!
On Monday, Mia was also introduced to the time out chair.  I've never put a child her age in time-out.  I've never had one who needed it...

Tuesday's highlights included finishing up our study of rocks by looking at and learning about metamorphic rocks.
(My children often purposefully match each other even if their shorts and shirts don't match as an outfit.)
We also needed to do Bible Buzzers Tuesday, because, well, why not!?

Wednesday seemed regular, except amplified.  Mia woke with a little cold and was whiny but still managed to be super busy.  Ahh.

Aqua Doodle...we love this thing.

Xavier got to use the handwriting app on the iPad while Natalee finished Rod and Staff reading.

Today was a great day.  Ever have a day where you just hit the ground running?  It helps when breakfast is all but done when I rise...I made banana bread last night and that, coupled with yogurt, made a very easy meal.  We got school started on time and made quick and efficient work of our lessons.  Natalee is feeling very successful with the Alpha Math U See and Xavier is flying through his Primer with great understanding of the concepts.  Natalee is also very much enjoying the Rod and Staff readers - they are Bible stories so she understands everything that is happening and looks forward to her story each week.
While working on my mom of the year award I purchased a 2 set of multi colored pens from the Dollar Tree.  Imagine my delight when they actually worked.  They are old school - the kind where you push the color you want down and then push the top to have it pop back up so you can choose another.  The kids are very impressed.
I also got out a baggy of stickers so they could sticker their work when I've checked the pages.  My mom of the year status was furthered when they found smelly stickers amongst them!

We continued with another week of From Akebu to Zapotec, our book about cultures who don't have access to the Bible in their own language.  This week's study took us to China.
I love the self made journaling pages to go with the book.  Love, love, love.  I also love stopping our school day to pray for these Bibleless peoples.  God, hear our prayers.

In Science we got to move on to minerals!  The mineral kit came yesterday and the kids love how pretty they are.  I heard a lot of, "MOM, you have to check this out!"
(Free review: these Toysmith brand rock and mineral kits were well worth their $8-9 a piece to expand our study and give it depth. )

In read-aloud land we finished up Charlotte's Web.  When Charlotte died Natalee declared she was "fine" but her eyes were big and misty.  Today was the last chapter.  What a rich book!

Next week we begin Homer Price.  The children have so enjoyed listening to Charlotte's Web read aloud (free from YouTube) that I decided to see if I could find Homer Price on audio for free.  I couldn't, and being the crazy that I am, I decided to record it myself.  So...during nap times I've been reading it aloud with my phone, chapter by chapter and uploading it to my little YouTube channel.  I'm silly, I know.  I've actually never read Homer Price, so, although a cold read isn't ideal for recording I'm finding I very much enjoy the book!

Today's effort to keep the littlest scholar busy...
I have 12 foam 4" balls I ordered for co-op P.E. and dumped them all in her lap to throw into the basket.  It did keep her busy for quite awhile.
At morning nap she somehow emptied a package of disposable diapers that she wears at night time.  They've sat on the same shelf beside her bed for three weeks and she's never touched them.  Sigh.  She looks sorry - not.  I've never met a child who can stay so quiet while NOT actually sleeping.  I mean, we're right outside her door so I hear every noise...obviously she's good at keeping quiet when she wants to.

While we do school Monday - Thursday (leaving Fridays for co-op, extra, etc.) the last few weeks we've needed Fridays (and sometimes snippets of Saturdays and Sundays) for catch up.  It feels really good going into tomorrow and being DONE with the week's lesson plans.
I love it when everything is highlighted (I highlight when we complete things)!
Co-op begins next week so it feels nice to have a successful week before we add that to the mix.  Tomorrow we hit the chiropractor and hopefully bowling with a friend before a nice {relaxing} weekend with Daddy.
We do have 2 doctor's appointments to squeeze into next week so we *might* use little chunks of time this weekend to jump start next week's lessons [ah, sorry - you just got the benefit of me thinking out loud!].

Happy weekend friends!  Whether you school at home or are preparing to send your kiddos back to school I hope you are able to so it with as much exuberance as is found in this humble little home!

What a fun post! Mom of the year award, indeed! Those buzzers. . .oh, I just might have to invest in some! I forget, did you buy them through Amazon or something special?

Love the throw-the-balls-in-the-clothesbasket idea. Totally gonna steal it! :)

I'm giggling at the toddler in the time out chair (sorry, can't help it!) and I"m looking forward to checking out Reading Rainbow on Netflix with my kiddos also.

We aren't starting school until after Labor Day--I'm not expecting a new little one this year. ;) Thanks for sharing your adventures as it might help me get more in the mood (I'm not at all in the mood yet!).
