radKIDS Week One

After being extremely please with Natalee's radKIDS course last summer I organized a course for the homeschool group.  We are doing two weeks of lessons for one hour a day to get the ten hours of education in.  Week one was a resounding success.  I'm so proud of all 11 children in the class and very thankful for the two instructors.
This week the children have covered pepper hands (attacking the eyes), hammer fists (attacking the nose), defensive blocks, fire safety, gun safety, family password safety and more.

They have talked a great deal about how they can't use their physical skills unless someone is attacking them or trying to take them.  They've also discussed how a "bad person" is someone who is trying to hurt them, trick them, or make them feel bad, and that they can tell an adult, "no" if they feel uncomfortable in any situation.

High Hammer Fists:

Pepper Hands:
Xavier got upset after his drill - he'd had to fight hard to get away (I was late starting the camera) and as you can see at the end of the video he was beginning to cry.
It's hard for parents, too, to expose them to so many ways to get away and to open their eyes to the fact that the world isn't all sunshine and roses, but I'm so thankful we have access to these tools and trainings to help them.

Defensive Blocks:

Fire Safety:

The one thing they've drilled and drilled to the children is that their most powerful weapon is their voice.  If someone tries to abduct them it will be less worth it to the abductor if the kid is shrieking and drawing attention to the situation.

If there is radKIDS in your area I encourage you to get your children involved.  It's for ages 5-12 and it's worth it in every way.
