The First Week of School

We went back to school on August 14th and I worked hard to make our kick off day fun and exciting for the kids.  We don't need new backpacks, and shoes, but we did do a celebratory breakfast, some new supplies, and new curriculum in some subjects.  All of the children were excited to get back to school and our daily routine.  We implemented some new schedules and systems this year, and I have to say - a month in - and we're really liking them, still!

Here are some pictures from the first week...
Xavier listening to Bible read aloud on the iPad while following along in his Bible.
Teaching Textbooks in a computer math software that we started both of the older children on this year.  We love it - the kids like getting computer time and mom likes having freedom from directly teaching math.
Xavier is actually finishing up his Rod and Staff Level 1 reading.  The freedom of homeschool allows us to go along at our own pace.
Ameliya got to officially start preschool.  One month in and she still eagerly asks every morning, "ready to do preschool, mama?"

Keeping Zayden happy and active (and not destructive) is a bit of a struggle. We're getting there.
We have been doing "rug time."  Setting a timer and giving him one bucket of toys to play with.  We're slowly increasing his time on the rug.  Overall he doesn't great and doesn't mind...
(look at that tower he built!)
sometimes he cleans up early and then...
...protests the remainder of his time until the timer beeps!
He only had 1 1/2 minutes left!

He did like the book bin rug time!  Little Golden books are his favorite!

Something new we're trying this year are "work boxes."  At the beginning of each week I type all of their work into these boxes and they can do them whenever, in whatever order (reasonably- a few subjects we still need to do together).  If they need my help and I'm not at the ready they find a box they can do independently until I'm available.  So far we all LOVE this.  We're getting more accomplished, the children are overall happy, and it feels terrific!

Both kids each have a spiral notebook and they write the start and end time of the subject they are working on.
This has been a huge help to me keeping hours (in MO we have to keep a record of our hours), and the kids have been really responsible in doing this.

Everyone loves Spanish!  I'm amazed with how much they know.

We couldn't do each day without our Young Living oils!
