Nov 11-17 Recap

Homeschooling is a lifestyle for us, not just a Monday-Friday education.  This week school started on Sunday with some non-core studies about recognizing the sacrifices of others.
After worship and a quick lunch, we made cookies and cards.  We made a plate for Papa Curtis, a plate for the oldest veteran at our church (Don Hilliard), and a plate to send with Daddy to work for his boss.  We could have made cookies all day, showing our love to the veterans who surround us!
I even made my little bakers wash, dry, and put away their measuring spoons/cups and utensils.  We are working on doing a job all the way.

While the cookies baked, they got busy and creative!
Xavier's card for Papa...
(he added the word you after appreciated after I took the picture!

Ameliya's card for Papa... She drew her flag and Papa by herself...
...then she had Daddy sketch her a Statue of Liberty and she colored it in.

Natalee's card for Papa...

A picture of our veteran, Papa Curtis.  Mia said, "he looks young!" when I showed her the picture.
Just for fun (and because I want it in my blog/scrapbook) a recent newspaper article of Dad's retirement announcement.

When the cookies and cards were done we delivered and got in a visit with Papa and Grandma.

CORE
Spelling was a review week for both kids, so no test, just some workbook review.

Reading marched on much the same as it has been, with the lessons being based around Bible stories.  One of Xavier's new words was legion - that stuck out to him!

We hit Science pretty hard this week!  We learned and reviewed vocabulary words with our Bee Bot, Word-O, and memory matching.  We have gone backwards and forwards through food chains and food webs!
We also brought some literacy into our science unit and worked on acrostic poems with our vocabulary words.

Math continues to be mostly review.  The review of fractions and oblique/horizontal/vertical lines did make the brains think, though!

We are still traveling along the trail exploring the west with Lewis and Clark and learning a ton about their discoveries in History.  We continue to read about a new American Indian tribe a week, this week the Blackfeet, which both kids already knew a great deal about because they just finished the book Om-kas-toe.

NON-CORE
We continue to participate in weekly Story Hours and this week we got to host.  The library ended up being closed but we forged ahead and held it at the church.
We shared some of our favorite books from Usborne:
  • Jonathan James and the Whatif Monster
  • Cordelia
  • Bob Is a Unicorn
  • Dog and Mouse
We had a great turn out with 39 kids.  One of the most popular stations was the "make a what-if monster" with play-doh!

Natalee had her piano lessons on Tuesday and was excited to get 2 new books, one of them a Christmas book.  I'm enjoying recognizing the tunes she's playing!

We had ballet and art again this week.  The older 2 completed their pop up flower project and prepared their journals for next week's thankfulness project.

I usually sit in the front classroom during ballet so the girls can give their full attention to their teacher, thus the reason for very few pictures.

J.A.M. continues to offer the children 20 minutes of organized physical game time each week plus 40 extra minutes (beyond what they get at home and on Sundays) of Bible teaching.

Because the library was closed the day of Story Hour, we had to make a separate trip.  We started Thursday out with some PE - a walk for the little 2 and I and a bike ride for the older 2 - to the library.
I was grateful for Natalee's bike basket to carry the book bag, and for sunshine and decent temperatures!  We worked up an appetite with our trip and had a early lunch with hot cocoa!

OTHER NEWS
Mia came down with a virus Monday night that ran into Tuesday.
A new sparkly outfit from Aunt Joanna helped the recovery along!
So did lots and lots of snuggles.  All day.  All night.

By Wednesday she was much better (thanks elderberry syrup!) but Papa Curtis/Nannie kept her during JAM so she could be 100% before re-entering public.

The younger two are addicted to the game Cootie.

Zayden learned how to hum this week!

Mia drew me a bunny, and I think it's a pretty fantastic likeness.

Friday = picnic lunch and The Star!

Xavier and I ended the week by watching Colby play basketball for the very first time at a home jamboree.  We rode along with Grandma Num and enjoyed watching Colby trying out a new skill!  He did very well!
