Today is Martin Luther King, Jr day. Although we are still learning about World History this year, we did take time yesterday and today to learn a bit about the Civil Rights movement in America. Over the weekend we watched Ruby Bridges and Melody 1963: An American Girl Story. Today we watched the Reading Rainbow episode and read our books about Martin Luther King, Jr. and followed with a New Dimension Media biography video. Yes, probably the most videos I've ever used for a little study, probably because it was kind of impromptu on my part!
I turned our daily writing into the classic I have a dream... prompt and am so pleased with the outcome of the children's journals today. First I had them brainstorm change that they wanted in their lives, the world, and our family, and then we turned those into sentences.
I would like to clarify that Xavier's family has food (but I guess it's normal for a 6 year old boy to always think about food?)! I also love that they brainstormed separately and had the same vision for what would make the world a better place. Our Window on the World book in history this year is leaving an impact, I think!
And me?
I have a dream that our family will find a way to have more time together.
I have a dream that this world will be a safe place to raise our children.
I have a dream that I will remember who I am when I'm not being a mommy.
