Week 2 {bubble foam, Vermont & Massachusetts, jelly!, beautiful evenings}

Another week in the books for the Beeler crew.

Homeschool is kind of a lifestyle for us, so the days seem to ebb and flow with a lot of lessons taught along the way, not all of which have a specific school category.

We began our week at worship.

This week in geography we continued in the New England states and learned about Vermont and Massachusetts.  Learning about Vermont and the maple sugar industry made me really want to tap trees.
We made a Boston cream pie from scratch for our "fun Friday" activity for geography.
We had to feed Ev to distract her from being toooooo helpful.
The children worked in pairs to make a yellow cake.  Then while the older two were at piano lessons with Miss Kathy, the younger two and I made the custard and the ganache.  We left the assembly for the older two when the returned.
They really did this largely on their own and I'm very proud of them.  I stepped back as much as possible and let them problem solve and work out working together (lot of chiefs in that kitchen!).  They did a great job.
Evie says, oh, we're smiling for cake?  Okay - I'm in!
A couple kids (and mom) didn't care for the custard layer, but overall everyone deemed this New England baking project a huge success!
We also learned that Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and took a turn trying to draw Seuss like characters.

Would you believe that in just the second week of school, we completely forgot to do our new cursive handwriting?  I know.  New habits and all.  We were pretty successful at doing our Not Consumed Bible study, though, so we still consider the week a success!

The evenings were just lovely and we spent most of them outdoors, enjoying each other and the cool temps.  We walked, rode bikes, and played in the yard.  I also love serving supper outside and sweeping/rinsing the mess away.
Daddy made a balance beam!

I had intended to begin Mia and Zayden's human body unit this week and just didn't get it accomplished.  We did get their bodies traced and hung up so that we can get rolling with it soon!

Keeping Ev busy is a full time position.  I am trying to plan one "fun" type activity a week and then the rest of the time let her choose from her smart cart.
On Tuesday I did bubble foam, and Zayden chose to take a break from school and join in.  Bubble foam is 2 parts water to 1 part tear free bubble bath, beaten on medium for a minute or two with a mixer.  I used a couple of different types of dye free/tear free bubble bath, but threw in one of those color changing tablets to each batch.
She and Zayden both loved it, however something I used made the sensitive new skin on Evie's burn react poorly and I had to get her washed off.  Those moments are hard for me.  Hard to not feel all that blame and shame settle back over me and ruin the fun of the moment.
Working hard, all day everyday.
She builds magnificent towers with these magnet blocks!
Stealing boogie boards like a boss...
Building tall towers!!

Math, reading, and writing marched along pretty much per usual.  We seem to never get through everyone's math without someone having some kind of meltdown but it's hardly ever the teacher anymore, so that's a bonus, right?

Other highlights of the week.....
A break for mom during "recess."
Natalee getting prepared for her co-op chemistry class.
Aunt Penny invited the kids for a long bike ride for recess!
Aunt Penny also sent over new building blocks for Ev.  So many towers this week!
Ev wants to help help help.  On this day I had sent her away too many times.  So I finally let her spread the fries out for supper.  Floor fries it is.
Natalee tried her hand at making English scones.  7 thumbs up from the Beeler democracy.
Papa Curtis asked her what the difference was between a scone and a biscuit.  "Not much," was the response.  LOL.  But if we call it a scone then we can add whipped cream without guilt, right? ;)
Changed my sign after 2 years.... credit to Ellie Holcomb music.
Anne of Green Gables cursive...
Leaf rubbing...
This was a hard part of the week.  Don't do me dirty, Wal-Mart.
A new marketplace treasure!
Friday morning was rouughhhh.  We ended up with 2 extras in our bed.  It was a pleasure to get up early for my Bible study and leave this chaos.
Fridays we are doing a "learning basket" instead of formal activities, as well as our state pennants and Lego builds.  We're loud.

We ended the week with Grandma Num coming up on Saturday and making peach, strawberry, and grape jelly with us!  She brought fresh bread, too!
We got a lot accomplished despite Mike being at work and us having the help of 5 extra pairs of hands.
Friday's roast became Saturday's beef and noodles.  The potatoes were instant.  The veggies were leftovers.  But the bread and the jelly were fresh and I served it outside since the table was messy....and it was delicious!
